Energy from Waste, Anaerobic Digestion Plant
Brief
Barfoots have gained industry-wide and international recognition for their commitment, investment and achievement in world-class farming and food production.
Sustainability is at the heart of their operations, with a key measure being the anaerobic digestion plant that allows them to turn vegetable waste into a viable source of renewable energy and organic fertilizer. Handel Rating Consultancy were instructed with the aim of driving down the very substantial operating cost imposed by business rates at this 1.2MW plant, which has the capacity to process 40,000 tons of food waste and energy crops per annum.
Action
HRC recommended an appeal be served challenging the 2010 rates assessment.
Result
Within 5 months from service of the appeal, a reduction of 20% in rateable value delivered a cash refund and forward savings estimated at over £500,000.
Significant discounts were obtained on account of the under utilisation of land within the site which should be carried over to future rating lists, saving very significant sums over the life of the plant.
